Nancy Bernstein, producer and previous head of production at DreamWorks Animation, died Friday after a battle with cancer. She was 55.

Bernstein spent ten years with DreamWorks, where she most recently oversaw all new business productions for the company’s global initiatives. She produced the 2012 animated movie “Rise of the Guardians.”

In 2011, the producer was diagnosed with colorectal cancer. She started the organization Call to Cure to raise both money and awareness for colon and colorectal cancer research at the USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Institute under the direction of Dr. Heinz-Josef Lenz.

DreamWorks said in a statement, “We are heartbroken by the loss of Nancy Bernstein, a dear family member who passed away on Friday following a long and courageous battle with illness … Nancy’s unwavering professional tenacity translated to her efforts in searching for a cure for colorectal cancer through her organization, Call to Cure. Our deepest sympathies go out to Nancy’s family during this incredibly difficult time.”

Bernstein is survived by her wife Cheryl and daughter Ruby.
