SENATE REPUBLICANS MOURN PASSING OF FORMER SENATOR AND DELEGATE JOHNNY JOANNOU

WILLIAMSBURG, VA, 6 MAY 2016 :  On behalf of the Virginia Senate Republican Caucus, Senate Majority Leader Thomas K. Norment, Jr. (R-James City) today issued the following statement on the passing of former Delegate and Senator Johnny S. Joannou of Portsmouth:

"Delegate Joannou was a dedicated public servant, representing the citizens of Hampton Roads with distinction throughout his 34 years as a member of the Virginia General Assembly.

"Having first been elected to the House during Mills Godwin's second term as Governor, Delegate Joannou retained the dedication and pragmatism of the elected officials of his era.  As a native son of Portsmouth, he proved to be an effective advocate and champion for the city he loved.  Throughout his 13 terms in the House and two in the Senate, he placed principle and the interests of his district ahead  of partisanship.    He was fiercely devoted to the people of Portsmouth and never shied away from reaching across the aisle to achieve positive results for the people who elected him to serve.

"On a personal note, I enjoyed working with Delegate Joannou on the conference committees on the budget.    His depth of knowledge and extensive experience made him an effective and invaluable conferee who was instrumental in securing Virginia's reputation for sound fiscal management."
