Former Ceann Comhairle, Seamus Pattison, Kilkenny is laid to rest

President Michael D Higgins led the mourners at the funeral Mass of former Ceann Comhairle, Seamus Pattison this afternoon in Kilkenny.

The city came out to pay its last respects to the 81-year-old who had a completely unblemished record of public service as a TD, councillor, Minister for State, Member of the European Parliament and Mayor of his beloved city.

Chief celebrant at his funeral Mass, family friend, Fr Willie Purcell said that Seamus had just contested his final election and had won his place at the greatest table of them all, beside God.

Labour party leader, Brendan Howlin was also present as was  Comdt. Caroline Burke, Aide de Camp to Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar as well as TDs, Senators and councillors from around the country.

Mr Pattison was buried this afternoon in Foulkstown cemetery on the city's Waterford Road.
