Police Dog Stabbed In San Diego Standoff

During the face-off, police sent in a service dog in an attempt gain compliance from the man, who allegedly responded by stabbing the dog.

SAN DIEGO, CA – A knife-wielding man holding police at bay during a brief standoff in an Encanto-area neighborhood stabbed a service dog Monday before officers were able to subdue and arrest him, authorities reported.

The canine, Dexter, suffered non-life-threatening wounds during the violent encounter in the 600 block of 64th Street, according to San Diego police.

The events that led to the attack on the animal began shortly after 8:30 a.m., when a resident made a 911 call to report that her son was clutching a kitchen knife and behaving in a threatening manner while standing on her front porch, according to San Diego police.

When patrol personnel arrived, the man refused to drop the makeshift weapon, public-affairs Officer Billy Hernandez said. During the confrontation, police sent the service dog to confront the man, who allegedly responded by knifing the animal.

At about 9:20 a.m., officers were able to subdue the belligerent man and take him into custody. His name was not immediately available.
