Eagles 5th midway through Rattler Invitational

Freshman Jackson Phillips was tied for eighth midway through the Rattler Invitational.
SAN ANTONIO (Feb. 19, 2018) – Lightning delayed the Rattler Invitational about midway through the second round on Monday, which might well have been a good thing for Oklahoma Christian's men's golf team.

The Eagles had slipped slightly from second place at the end of the first round into fifth place when the second round was halted. Play will resume at The Dominion Country Club on Tuesday at 8 a.m., with players to finish the second round before playing the third round.

Playing in its first event of the spring season, OC was in strong shape after the first round, shooting a 301 (13-over-par) to place itself in second place in the 16-team field, three shots behind Texas A&M-Commerce.

But the Eagles slipped a bit in the second round, and in a tightly bunched field, they dropped in the standings. OC was nine-over for the round and 22-over for the tournament when play was halted.

Texas A&M-Commerce leads the tournament at 6-over, followed by Henderson State (Ark.) at 12-over, host St. Mary's (Texas) at 16-over and St. Edward's (Texas) at 21-over.

Two Eagles were in the individual top 10 in the 85-man field. Junior Cameron Brown and freshman Jackson Phillips both will begin Tuesday at 2-over, tied for eighth, although Phillips is playing as an individual, meaning his score doesn't count toward OC's team score.

Brown had OC's best opening round, an even-par 72 on the 6,892-yard course. Junior Juan Pallach and freshman Andres Brictson each shot a 76, followed by Garrett White (77) and Ethan Smith (78). Pallach is at 4-over, while Brictson, White and Smith are at 9-over entering Tuesday.

Phillips posted a 74 to start the tournament, and both he and Pallach were at even par for the second round when play was halted.

Emilio Gonzales of St. Mary's was the individual leader, at 2-under through nine holes of the second round.
