CHARLOTTE -- A member of a prominent Charlotte family who had a major impact on UNC Charlotte has died.

Irwin Belk passed away Saturday.

His father started the Belk department store.

In the 1960s, Irwin Belk was a state senator and over the years served on the UNC Board of Governors and the UNC Charlotte Board of Trustees.

The Track and Field Complex at UNC Charlotte bears his name.

Belk was 95 years old.
