Books on Bikes is a summer literacy program for families in the Fort Atkinson community that will be launched in June 2018. The district elementary and middle school librarians and other guest riders will volunteer their time for weekly bicycle rides on several routes in Fort Atkinson. The bikes will be pulling trailers loaded with books to give to students and their families at designated stops along the route.
The Books on Bikes program is designed to focus on families who do not have access to books through the public library and/or have few books in their homes. Our stops on the bike routes will be located in neighborhoods where these families live and spend time during the summer.
This program will give students and their families books to read at home during the summer months to help foster a love of reading and maintain the reading skills attained the previous school year. Because it is a district and city-wide program, we hope to reach a broad range of students and their families.
We hope to continue this program indefinitely and will rely on fundraising and donations to replenish our book supply and maintain the equipment and supplies we will utilize each summer. At this time we are pursuing funding opportunities to cover our startup costs, which will include:
Bicycles- 5 @ $500 each= $2500
Trailers- 5 @ $70 each= $350
Helmets- 5@ $20 each= $100
Promotional Items & Advertising= $1000
Books= $1500
Cooler= $250
Freezer= $200
Freeze Pops= $100
We are seeking funding for half of this amount, hoping that additional fundraising and grants will cover the remaining costs. We are hoping to have our project fully funded by May of 2018 before our launch in June.
