Sonic the Hedgehog film dated for November 2019 (update)

Sonic the Hedgehog Sega

Sonic the Hedgehog will star in a feature film set to debut next year, according to franchise publisher Sega and producing partner Paramount Pictures. The movie is expected to hit theaters on Nov. 15, 2019.

Sega first announced that it was bringing its classic character to the big screen back in February 2016. Later that year, Deadpool director Tim Miller signed on as executive producer, bringing along newcomer Jeff Fowler to direct. Fowler’s best known previous work is Oscar-nominated short “Gopher Broke.”

Back then, the Sonic the Hedgehog movie was scheduled for a 2018 release. Instead, Sega will now target next year’s holiday season, which gives us plenty of time to wonder anxiously about how Sonic the Hedgehog’s speed and ’tude will translate to theaters. (Perhaps we should look to Deadpool for clues.)

The most we know about Sonic’s Hollywood debut is that the film will use both live-action footage and computer-generated animation — which sounds a lot like the upcoming Detective Pikachu movie, which is set to predate Sonic’s feature by several months; it’s out on May 10, 2019. Otherwise, details remain scant.

Update: Sega confirmed that it’s working with Paramount Pictures to produce the Sonic film, with Marza Animation Planet working on the CGI animation. Sega first mentioned Marza Animation Planet’s involvement in 2014, although it initially announced Sony Pictures as its partner instead of Paramount.
