Love is...

a verb.
creating space for each other.
holding each other's stories.
building more of what we want in the world, while dismantling that which harms.
giving when we can give, and accepting others' offerings.

In 2017 Interstate Arts slowed down to do more of THIS.
That's why this year's newsletter is a Love Letter.
Read on below to learn more.

THANK YOU to those who acted with LOVE this year.
THANK YOU for joining us now for a more loving 2018 through art and creative process!

peace to you and yours,
Shoshanna

Good Bones multimedia performance, Rescheduled for Spring, is underway

MAKE A NOTE! The Good Bones performance was rescheduled for Spring 2018, to embrace a deeper dive and evolving relationships. Keep an eye out for more details!

GOOD BONES 2017 Process Highlights:

FALL

• Manual Cinema co-director Julia Miller led two days of inspiring shadow puppetry workshops at Play House, Detroit.
• Play House was transformed into a live interactive shadow lab for The Hamtramck Neighborhood Arts Festival.

• Our core performer team's devising process incorporated our new knowledge.
• WE WERE SO GEEKED! to test animated projections from Diane Christiansen on the Boggs School building.
• I-A welcomed performer, archivist and educator Michelle McKinney to the Good Bones team as voice of the building and contributing writer.

SUMMER

• "The Gig" explored the visual style, sound and content of Good Bones in a short puppet piece at CMAP's Puppet Lab in collaboration with Richard Newman and Liza Bielby.
• Diane Christiansen visited Detroit to generate animation content.
• The Reel N Wheel lives on in the Popps Packing tool library!

WINTER/SPRING

• Wayne State senior Lindsey Hart completed an administrative internship for GB.
• Brent 'Blak'Smith and Shoshanna Utchenik created a narrative outline for the play inspired by the oral histories we've collected from neighbors including Sharon Graves, pictured here with Brent.

• One Custom City printed Lindsay McCaw's poster of Arthur "Red" Tabb, and our donation of 3 GB posters to the Boggs School benefit auction raised more than $400 for the school!

I-A in Chicago International Puppetry Festival

Interstate Arts' PLAY with your food performed at six venues across the city as part of the Chicago International Puppetry Festival Neighborhood Tour. We were even highlighted playing with our food on the local news!

More Community Love

This fall marked our 5th annual Dia de los Muertos ofrenda at the Boggs School. Our tradition got a shout out in this article by past I-A collaborator Amanda Lichtenstein, "Why You Should Talk to Ghosts", included as one of Bright Magazine's "Favorite Stories of 2017"!

Followed by another wild summer of youth art camps in Farmington Hills' Heritage Park, Shoshanna served the Roeper School as artist-in-residence, and event facilitator for their 75th anniversary celebration event in May which joyfully reflected the community through the arts.
