Social Equity and Inclusion in Action: Special Events and Keynotes

This year's Gloria Hobson Nordin Social Equity Luncheon and Section for Women in Public Administration (SWPA) Breakfast will feature speeches focusing on social equity, inclusion and advancing these ideals in public administration.

The Gloria Hobson Nordin Luncheon, taking place Sunday, March 11 at 11:45 a.m., will include remarks from former Virginia Governor L. Douglas Wilder, a man whose career spans more than 40 years in public service. He became the first African-American to be elected governor in the United States, leading the Commonwealth of Virginia from 1990 to 1994. In this role, he was commended for his sound fiscal management and balancing the state budget during difficult economic times.

An attorney by profession, Gov. Wilder gained recognition as a leading criminal trial lawyer. He graduated from Howard University Law School in 1959 and later established the legal firm that became known as Wilder, Gregory & Associates, one of the few minority-owned businesses in Virginia at the time. Though now in his 80s, Gov. Wilder has not slowed a bit. He is still a highly involved and highly dedicated citizen of the city that he has called home for most of his life and one of its best and most outspoken ambassadors. At present, Gov. Wilder is a Distinguished Professor at Virginia Commonwealth University’s L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs. He also is the driving force for establishing a National Slavery Museum. You can find more information about Gov. Wilder online here.

The annual SWPA Breakfast, Monday, March 12 at 7:30 a.m., will include remarks from Brenda Allen, vice chancellor for diversity and inclusion at the University of Colorado Denver—Anschutz Medical Campus. She also is a professor of communication; her scholarship focuses on organizational communication and diversity.

Allen was recruited from Howard University to the University of Colorado Boulder in 1989 as an assistant professor and, since that time, has been promoted to professor and has served as a department chair and associate dean. She assumed her role as chief diversity officer in August 2012. Among her numerous publications is the groundbreaking book, Difference Matters: Communicating Social Identity. She has received numerous forms of recognition for her commentment to diversity, women's leadership and inclusion. You can find more information about Dr. Allen online here.

You will want to be in the audience to hear from these speakers. Register today for the conference and make sure you add these events to your registration. (Already registered? Contact us to add them on.)
