The 2018 versions of Callaway’s premium balls have graphene – which helped earn its Russian-born creators the 2010 Nobel Prize for Physics – in the outer core of both model’s ‘Dual SoftFast Core’, allowing the difference in compression between the two cores to be increased for performance benefits at both ends of the bag.

Graphene is added to the outer core as a reinforcing agent resulting in an increase in size and softness for the inner core to deliver more speed and reduced spin with driver, fairways woods and long irons, which leads to increased distance.

Whereas spin is minimised for distance gains with the long clubs it increases around the greens, again due to the addition of graphene, which allows the ball to better maintain its shape at impact due to its strength, 200 times that of steel. The new outer core also combines with the new softer urethane cover of both the Chrome Soft and Chrome Soft X, the two gripping together more efficiently to further improve short iron spin.

“The new Chrome Soft is unlike any Tour proven golf ball we have ever made,” Senior Vice President, Research and Development at Callaway Golf Dr. Alan Hocknell said. “It’s different. Using graphene as a reinforcing agent in the outer core transforms what we can do with performance.”

Feel is the primary difference between the two models with the X version designed with players who swing their driver above 105mph, like to work the ball and favour firmer feel in mind as opposed to the Chrome Soft, which will produce a straighter flight and softer feel to appeal to a wider variety of players.

More commonly associated with a new driver or iron model, the new golf ball models also offer improved forgiveness, with the new softer inner core making both the Chrome Soft and Chrome Soft X easier to compress on off-centre hits, helping to preserve ball speed and distance.

The new Chrome Soft range will be available in stores beginning February 16.

RPP: $64.99 (dozen).
