Vintage Cupano Brunello di Montalcino

Hi Folks,

AMAZING BRUNELLO DEAL!! Cupano Brunello di Montalcino "is the single best up-and-coming producer of Brunello today," according to Ian d'Agata and is garnering widespread critical acclaim which is exceedingly rare for an estate that is only 20 years old.  Mentored by the great HENRI JAYER in Burgundy, the winemaking team of Ornella Tondini and Lionello Cousin craft biodynamic, organic, tiny production sumptuous Brunelli of balance, elegance, and distinction.      In the last decade, the price of this wine has skyrocketed to where the new vintages are all north of $100 per bottle.   I am able to offer vintage bottlings direct from the estate at half of the price.   This is a very rare deal.   I have had these vintages many times and they are simply excellent.  The chance to drink perfectly aged wine of this value at this price is impossible.   What else do you want out of a bottle of wine?

“I still remember the first Brunello I tasted from Cupano, where I was and what I was doing. It was the 2001, and I was floored by the promise of this young winery, only in its second vintage at the time. Inspired by Henri Jayer, proprietors Ornella and Lionel Cousin follow an approach of low yields, full phenolic ripeness, natural yeasts and malolactic fermentation in French oak… As good as the wines are young, the real surprise is just how well they develop in bottle.” -Antonio Galloni

I Want Cupano Brunello
The Story of Cupano
The birth of the Cupano winery began in 1997 when Ornella Tondini and Lionello Cousin found a pristine piece of land on the outskirts of Montalcino. Tondini and Cousin were inspired by the great Henri Jayer, and with its sandy and cobble strewn soils, unmolested by machinery and chemicals for nearly 40 years, they saw this untouched land as the perfect beginning. What followed was a carefully thought-out plan to craft the best Brunello possible.

Located in the far southwestern corner of Montalcino, near Camigliano, Cupano is a small winery surrounded by forest land and olive groves. The winery sits behind a hill and overlooks the beautiful Ombrone river valley. For Tondini and Cousin this was a unique opportunity to grow grapes on completely natural soils in a perfect microclimate. In the early days, they consulted with Carlo Ferrini on all aspects winemaking. He gave them advice on density, height and the correct root-stock, among other things. Carlo was instrumental in providing the foundation for a truly great wine.

As a result, everything is done by hand, with careful attention in the vineyard and minimal intervention in the winery. Lionello employs a strict organic and biodynamic regimen, practices honed from working alongside Francios Bouchet, who was instrumental in all aspects of the vineyard management. Jayer’s influence is ever-present. They rely on the yeasts naturally available to promote fermentation and all the wines are aged in Barrique. The final blessing is reserved for Giulio Gambelli, who gives a customary silent nod when the wine is ready for the pubic.

This attention to detail and dogged adherence to the land makes Cupano one of the most enjoyable Brunello on the market. The winery produces three wines, a Brunello, a Rosso and a super-Tuscan called the Ombrone. They produce a mere 1,100 cases.
