Bill Cosby’s daughter Ensa Cosby was on the verge of a kidney transplant when she died unexpectedly Friday from renal disease, her husband revealed after her private funeral.
“She had been battling kidney issues for the past couple of years, she had been in dialysis. She fought, very brave,” Ensa’s husband Martin McLean, 55, told DailyMail.com.
He said a donor kidney had been found and transplant surgery was in the process of being scheduled when Ensa passed away at Massachusetts General Hospital.
“It was not expected. It was not expected at all. Transplant was imminent, and (her death) was not expected. It was sudden,” he said.
“We didn’t have a date (for the surgery), we had a time-frame,” he said. “It was going to be pretty close, sometime in the future.”
Ensa, 44, was married to McLean for four years, he said.
They had no children together, but they were parenting her daughter together, he said.
The fourth of Cosby’s five children, Ensa was buried next to her brother Wednesday at their parents’ compound in Shelburne Falls, a rural area of western Massachusetts, Daily Mail reported.
McLean spoke as he was driving away from the small, private family service.
“The Cosby Family thanks many people for their prayers for their beloved and beautiful Ensa, who recently died from renal disease,” Bill Cosby’s spokesman Andrew Wyatt said in a statement to the Daily News when news of Ensa’s death surfaced Monday.
Ensa’s only brother Ennis Cosby was a 27-year-old graduate student at Columbia University when he was shot to death in 1997 while changing a flat tire near a freeway off ramp in Los Angeles.
A 22-year-old man was later tied to the killing and sentenced to life in prison without parole.
Ensa Cosby was one of her father’s fiercest defenders against the scores of women who claim the comedian sexually assaulted them, often with the use of drugs.
She spoke out before his trial last year on charges he drugged and molested former Temple University staffer Andrea Constand at his suburban Philadelphia mansion in 2004.
“How my father is being punished by a society that still believes black men rape white women but passes off ‘boys will be boys’ when white men are accused, and how the politics of our country prove my disgust. My father has been publicly lynched in the media,” she said.
Cosby has pleaded not guilty in the case and is due to stand trial a second time this spring after his last trial ended in a hung jury.
