Faridabad, Jan 11: In another case of alleged inflated billing by hospitals, a family has sought probe after a pregnant woman died at a Faridabad hospital, which made a bill of Rs 18 lakh for 22 days. A pregnant woman, suffering from fever, died at Faridabad’s Asian Hospital. The hospital administration handed over a bill of Rs 18 lakh to her family for a 22-day treatment.

According to ANI, the family of the deceased has demanded an investigation against the hospital administration. “She had fever but was shifted to ICU. They said she has typhoid and later said she has a perforated intestine,” said the uncle of the deceased woman.

“They asked us to submit Rs 3 lakh for operation and said that it’ll be done once entire amount is submitted. We have submitted Rs 10-12 Lakh so far. They asked for Rs 18 lakh,” he added.

The hospital administration has said that they suspected typhoid and began the woman’s treatment accordingly. “She was 32-weeks pregnant and had fever since 8-10 days. We suspected typhoid and began treatment in ICU. Her child couldn’t survive. We found she had a perforated intestine. A surgery was done but we couldn’t save her,” said Dr Ramesh Chandna, Chairman, Quality and Safety, Asian Hospital.

This incident comes at a time when hospitals are facing probe for inflated billing allegations by patients’ families in the recent past. Earlier last month, a family was charged Rs 15 lakh by Fortis Hospital in Gurgaon for the treatment of a 7-year-old girl suffering from dengue, who later died.
