Top 3 Haitian-American Books of 2017

I have to admit, 2017 was a difficult year –and yet I am confident that 2018 will be my best year. I am certain many of us can relate to the preceding statement. Nevertheless, I am honored to have witnessed many new discoveries in the Haitian community here in the U.S. and in Haiti. This year was driven by determined publishing momentum as well as aggressive informative gatherings for Haitians abroad and in Haiti.

This year 3 specific books caught my attention –with one Honorable Mention that deserved a noteworthy consideration. I have started or completed some of them. Trust me, I set out to read every page of each one of them before the last minute of this year.

Alright, let’s get to it!

1. Haïti a Choisi de Devenir Un Pays Pauvre, Les Vingt Raisons Qui Le Prouvent by Etzer Emile. The author is an excellent writer. The book –written in French— has a very distinctive title. One that grabs everyone’s attention. I applaud the author for his boldness and candor on defining the assorted causes that consistently dragging Haiti behind in the ladder of development. 2. Lakay by David Frederick. To be a child in Haiti is not the same in other developed countries. I am very surprised by the author’s writing on his childhood and the socio-political turbulences Haiti experienced in the earlier times. David presented the results of hope and perseverance –certain characters that many Haitian individuals exhibit in their resilient personality. Order yours here.

3. Haiti History 101: The Definitive Guide to Haitian History by Kreyolicious. This is a recent publishing. The author has been sharing specific background history on Haiti for quite some time on her website. Thus, this is not unexpected that she has gifted us with this Christmas contribution. This will be a good read, especially for those who were born abroad, and want to learn of the History of Haiti. Honorable Mention: From Aid to Trade by Daniel Jean-Louis and Jacqueline Klamer. This book was published last year. However, the success the author Daniel has grasped this year is nothing like last year. From one conference to another talk show, Daniel is recognized as a leader in international development. “From Aid to Trade confronts the inadequacies of current foreign aid strategies and offers a clear means of economic and personal growth for individuals seeking a positive future for Haiti and other developing countries.” Find it here.
