Fitness tips to keep you from hibernating this winter

Winter is a great time to try new fitness activities like snowshoeing, skiing or fat-tire bike riding.

Too often, winter gets a bad rap when it comes exercise. For many of us, it can be easy to hunker down and hibernate once the snow falls and the temperatures remain below zero.

This year, make the most of the many opportunities Wisconsin offers to stay active and healthy.

Don’t be a spectator

Taking your kids sledding? Race them up the hill, slide down alongside them and repeat until exhausted. Building a snow fort or snowman? Grab your warmest pair of gloves and get to packing that snow. There is no reason to leave all the fun activities to the kids. These activities are excellent because they are considered “free fitness.” No structure is needed, and no membership dues to pay. Simply get outside and enjoy winter with family and friends.

Wake up earlier

Especially around the holidays, make time to work out before the day gets going and festivities begin. Despite the longer nights and darker mornings, there are still 24 hours in each day. Although commutes may take a few extra minutes due to weather conditions, continue to prioritize your health. Your last 20 minutes of sleep are typically spent dreading the alarm clock anyway, so choose to wake up early and get your day started with a heart-pumping workout.

Try new activities

Winter offers a whole new range of activities that summer cannot. Try cross-country skiing, snowshoe hikes and fat bike rides. Many local bike/outdoor shops have great rental programs and demo opportunities to get involved without committing to purchase. The many miles of freshly groomed trails throughout northeastern Wisconsin are just waiting for you to begin exploring.

Liquid calories flow fast

A common resolution this time of year is to lose or maintain body weight. Between office parties and social gatherings, liquid calories always seem to sneak in without us realizing it. To maintain your peak performance and health, be mindful of your consumption of liquid calories such as hot chocolate, holiday punch and other adult beverages. Try setting your beverage down between each sip, or use a small straw to make each drink last longer.

Ask for advice

Whether you are continuing your progress from the fall or starting new resolutions, never be afraid to ask for advice. Learning the ins and outs of your new fitness facility may take time, but welcoming staff are happy to get you on the right track. Jump-starting your current routine may be as easy as a complimentary sit-down session with a personal trainer. Take advantage of these opportunities and your winter will be more productive than ever.

Everyone deserves some downtime around the holidays. Kick your feet up, give thanks and relax with family. Then, get back to focusing on the future. Winter is the perfect time to get outside, explore new activities and prioritize your health.
