Nie możemy się już doczekać! Skąd czerpiesz inspirację do tworzenia muzyki? Czy inspirujesz się wydarzeniami w swoim życiu?
Myślę, że kiedy tworzę muzykę, to rzeczą, która mnie inspiruje, to chęć wydobycia z trąbki odpowiedniej melodii. Mogę iść przez wiele różnych piosenek, które brzmią dobrze, jak są śpiewane, ale inną sprawą jest znalezienie takich, które brzmią dobrze, jak są zagrane na trąbce… Złapałem się na tym, że robiłem przesiew przez wiele rodzajów muzyki. Najbardziej satysfakcjonuące dla mnie jest wykonywanie ich później na żywo. Musisz pokazywać muzykę i swoje występy ludziom.
Kiedy opowiadasz o artystach, którzy Cię inspirują, to wymieniasz zarówno jazzowych muzyków, jak np. Miles Davis, ale także takich popowych, jak Peter Gabriel czy Paul Simon. Każdy z nich reprezentuje inny gatunek muzyczny oraz inną osobowość, ale czy jest coś wspólnego w ich twórczości, co Cię inspiruje w muzyce?
Ich indywidualność i głosy to rzeczy, które ich łączą i mnie inspirują. Kiedy tylko usłyszysz Milesa Davisa, to wiesz, że to on. Podobnie z Peterem Gabrielem, Frankiem Sinatrą czy Joni Mitchell. Nie zdzierają niczego od innych, tylko jest to dla nich bardzo indywidualne.
Czasem cytujesz Joni Mitchell, która powiedziała kiedyś “Bycie muzykiem to 1% talentu od Boga oraz 99% szaleństwa”. Co te słowa znaczą dla Ciebie?
Myślę, że szaleństwo można tłumaczyć jako energię, wytrwałość i poświęcenie. To paliwo, które pozwala temu jednemu procentowi talentu wyjść, i z tym się zgadzam. Jest wielu utalentowanych muzyków, którzy z tego czy innego powodu nie jest zainteresowanych tym, o czym kiedyś powiedział Loius Armstrong: “musisz nieść ludziom muzykę i musisz ich bawić”. Myślę, że musisz wychodzić na miasto dzień po dniu i występować dla ludzi, prowokować interakcję między nimi i mieć pewność, że twoja kariera to najważniejsza rzecz w twoim życiu. Ja nie mam życia poza muzyką. Może to, co powiem, zabrzmi dziwnie, ale coś w tym jest. Ciągle rozmawiam z młodymi ludźmi i mówię im: “jeśli jesteś pewny, że chcesz być koncertującym muzykiem, to musisz to naprawdę kochać i zdawać sobie sprawę, że nie będziesz w stanie mieć psa, hodowli czy kota… I wiesz, związki też mogą być trudne, ale plusy z tego są fantastyczne”. Ja tak mam przez ostatnie dziesięć lat i kocham to!

In October you apply in Poland. It will have more concerts weight of our country. Upcoming whether these will be different from those already seen ? What to surprise this all his Polish fans?
We have some new personnel and some new material…maybe it’s going to be a tad bit more jazzy this time. We’re definitely looking forward to coming back to Poland!
It’s been three years since you have released your last album – Grammy winning “Impressions”. When can we expect your new album? We can’t wait to hear it!

How do you come up with ideas for music? Do they come from your life experience?
I think when your making an album the thing that inspires me musically is to get melodies that sing on the trumpet the right way. So, I can go through a lot of different songs that sound well when sung, but to find ones that have a really beautiful vocal quality but play well on the trumpet…I find myself sifting through so many types of music. What is the most satisfying for me creatively is to then take that and perform it live. Because ultimately you have to bring your music and your show to the people and that is what spurs me creatively – to stand up and see if it works live.
When it comes to the music that has inspired you during your career you mention both jazz players like Miles Davis and some of the pop singers like Peter Gabriel or Paul Simon. They represent different music genres and attitudes, but is there anything they have in common that particularly inspires your music?
Their individuality and their voice is what they have in common. You certainly know Miles Davis when you hear him and the same goes for someone like Peter Gabriel or Sinatra or Joni Mitchell. Their core, their essence, is so uniquely them and when they play it’s the only place you can hear that sound. They are not ripping anything off, it’s so individual to them.
You sometimes quote Joni Mitchell saying “Being a musician is 1 percent God-given talent and the other is 99 percent insanity’. What do these words mean for you?
I think the insanity part really translates in to drive, perseverance and dedication. That is the fuel that allows the 1% of talent to come out and I agree with her on that. There are many many talented musicians that for one reason or another….like Louis Armstrong says “you have to bring the music to the people and you have to entertain them.”…and a lot of musicians are not interested in that. I think you need to go out day after day and perform for people and interact and be driven and make sure your career is the most important thing in your life. For me, I don’t have a life outside of my music. I mean it sounds crazy to say but it’s really sort of the truth. I go speak to young people all the time, and say ‘if you really sure you want to be a touring musician, then you have to really love it and that means you may not be able to have a dog and a plant and a cat, and you know, relationships can be very difficult, but the upside is so fantastic. I have found myself in the last ten years being in this constant orbit and I love it!
