Nothing is easy in The Big Easy

PI Jake Longly and Nicole Jamison head to New Orleans at the behest of Nicole's uncle, movie producer Charles Balfour, when his megastar, A-list actor Kirk Ford, awakens in his hotel bed with the body of Kristi Guidry, a local college coed. Ford, in the Big Easy for a location shoot, remembers little of the evening and nothing of the murder. And, to make matters worse, Kristi is the niece of a local mafioso-type who will do whatever is necessary to avenge her death. Balfour is losing money every day the filming is stalled―he needs his actor cleared, and quickly.

Surrounded by glitzy Hollywood stars and intimidated by seedy underworld characters, Jake and Nicole encounter nothing but obstacles. Something isn't right. The facts don't fit. Who would want Kristi dead? Why frame Kirk for the murder? Everyone has an opinion, including Kristi's friends and ex-boyfriend, the local homicide detectives, and a fortune-teller. The clock is ticking as Jake and Nicole struggle to decipher who's lying, who's telling the truth, and exactly who schemed to murder Kristi Guidry. Nothing is easy in The Big Easy.

This is my first DP Lyle read. I did because he works at giving back to the writing profession, helping aspiring writers like me find their way through the weeds. I felt l owed him a debt of gratitude. It turned out to be terrific read. He’s a topnotch writer with a gift for dialogue, plot structure, character development, escalating tension, and all of the elements that are critical to crafting outstanding stories. This was the first of his books I’ve read, but it certainly won’t be the last.

A well-paced read with memorable characters and decent twists on the road to the solution. It comes in the guise of a locked-room mystery, but of course no whodunit ever takes place in a truly locked room. The answer contains some surprises, but is quite plausible. There are some interesting bits about the setting, New Orleans, from a tourist's perspective, but that's ok, since the main characters are out-of-towners. I lived in the city for 26 years and still found myself on the outside, so I appreciated that the author didn't try to claim expertise.

writing style verging on too slick without substance. A luxury travelogue of NOLA by 2 dimensional characters that could be developed into interesting people. Secondary cast more interesting. Culprit apparent very early, with no other real suspects once the cards are dealt.

Review: A-list, by D. P. Lyle

Five Stars. Private investigator, Nicole Jamison, pulls out of the parking lot full speed ahead and never gets in the slow lane, while Jake Longly is along for the ride. Afterall, it is her case. Her A-list Hollywood playboy/actor friend from the past finds himself in a locked hotel room with a dead girl in his bed. Guilty? As sin. Put lipstick on the case and move on. That’s sorta Jake’s take on the murder, until Ray, Jake’s cynical father, gets a whiff of suspicion and puts his nose in the middle of the dark side of a New Orleans’ crime syndicate.
Jake has a keen sense of observation which makes this tale entertaining. Situations and personalities trip Jake up and it seems that he’s the guy who can’t get out of the way from himself. The plot cleverly drives along on autopilot and Lyle gives us a vivid stream of humorous and harrowing events set in New Orleans.
A-list is a fast paced who-dunit, with sprinkles of humor, plot twists, and clever narrations behind an evidence bag that seems to be empty. The Jake Longly series is my favorite read, but Jake, you really have to do something about Tammy in your next episode.

A couple of private investigators come to New Orleans to solve a murder and wind up eating at every restaurant in a tourist guidebook. Well , yea but seriously, it is a fun and good read. Fast paced and full of interesting characters. Really, does every work of fiction set in New Orleans have to have at least one character named Guidry? You will figure out who the murder is about half way through the book, but that doesn't make the remaining chapters any less entertaining. The author gets New Orleans "mostly" right from the view of a tourist and an outsider, however there are two or three very minor to the plot but glaring errors. Nothing that effects the story and I will leave it to you to spot them. Certainly worth reading. I enjoyed it.

I've just finished reading my third D. P. Lyle book in The Jake Longly series, his second book. I discovered this great author when reading his third book first. For me to have read these three books back-to-back and have spent almost $30.00 on them is very high praise. I normally spend 99¢ on the self-pub Sci-Fi I read.
Before we got our Kindles, my wife and I used to share reading mostly murder mystery books, the hardcover $20.00 ones. I had gotten away from that genre but I'm glad my wife didn't and introduced me to Lyle's books. I'm going to have to track down and read his other books, it's worth it.

A-List is the second in the Jake Longly series after opener, Deep Six. I enjoyed it, but maybe a tad less than the first.

The main characters are the same as the previous book. Jake is our narrator, but its more of a PI collective with girlfriend, Nicole; BFF Pancake aka Tommy and his dad, Ray who runs Longly investigations making up the team.

Nicole's uncle is a hot-shot Hollywood type and he needs some help. His star man, Kirk Ford is on location filming in New Orleans and there's a dead girl in his bed. The girl is the niece of a New Orleans gangster type and he's not happy. Kirk's in the frame for murder and he's going to pay one way or another.

The Longly team de-camp to New Orleans and do some investigating. Not everything is as it seems.
I like the dynamics of the book and the interactions of the main characters, in particular Jake and Nicole. There's a subtle wit to their exchanges and it makes for one of those easy reader-character relationships that would be diminshed if one of the pair was missing.

New Orleans as a setting, I can take or leave to be honest. I've read a few books set there (James Lee Burke - maybe peripherally from memory), and in truth it doesn't excite me as much as say Chicago or Detroit, plucking a couple of US cities from the air.

The story unfolds with the Longly's investigating and I think at the three-quarter mark I guessed who did it, if not necessarily the exact why they did it. I don't think my realisation spoiled the last quarter, in some ways it's kind of nice to be ahead of the curve.

Humour, characters, story and pacing were good. There's some action and conflict. Pancake dishes out some bruises to get information and there's a good guys - bad guys vibe with some dumb guys hanging in the middle. Lyle has an easy style of writing which keeps you engaged. Setting was so-so. Overall more to like than dislike.
