Utah mom and daughter both run for state legislature

(KUTV)- A record number of women are running for public office in Utah and across the country.

In Davis County, 2 women with very close ties are running for state legislature.

Dawn Nunn has been keeping her eye on the Utah State Legislature for years as lawmakers debate the possibility of dropping the requirement that attorneys have to tell lawmakers if a potential bill they are voting on may violate the constitution.

Feeling like the requirement was a necessary guidance, Nunn decided to run for the Utah State Legislature in Fruit Heights. “I really feel like we've lost our values and our ethics,” Nunn said.

After making up her mind, she sent a text to her mother, Cheryl Nunn, who lives in Layton. What she didn't know was her mom was planning on running too! So the day before the deadline, mom and daughter made it a family affair and filled out their paperwork together in Farmington.

“I care about people,” Cheryl said, “and it was just asked yesterday and I decided to step up."

Both women say they have felt underrepresented and were eager to see more women run for public office. Angered by the election of Donald Trump for president, they both decided they would be the change they wanted to see.

Both running as Democrats, the mother-daughter duo realizes it could be a tall order, but are excited to try, together, as a family.
